REVIEW - New Drugs in Hypertension
Abstract
Hypertension has become a major problem of public health in this country affecting a large population. Although hypertension has been recognised as a disease over a century (Mohamed 1874), the major advance in therapy have occured in the past two and halt decades. Statistics acquired from life insurance data clearly indicated that higher the systolic or diastolic pressure, the greater the mortality from cardiovascular diseases. It now appears that hypertension underlies a whole variety of cardiovascular diseases including sudden death, angina pectoris, acute myocardial infarction (with or without complication), aortic aneurysm, atherosclerotic obstruction of aorta, strokes and Renal Failure (Roberts 1975).
