This work was aimed at assessing these claims to determine the hepatoprotective effects ofCarissa edulis.

Methods: The ethanolic leaf extract of Carissa edulis was scrutinized for hepatoprotective activity against Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4 ) induced liver damage. Biochemical parameters were studied to assess the hepatoprotective activity of the ethanolic extract in serum. Total Bilirubin, Total Protein, Albumin, Aspartate Transaminase, Alanine Transaminase, Alkaline Phosphatase, Total Cholesterol, Triglyceride and High-Density Lipoprotein were determined to assess the effect of the extract on CCl4 induced hepatic damage. Other test conducted include, liver antioxidant test like glutathione, malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, catalase and histopathological assessment of liver sections..

Results: The markers in the animals treated with CCl4 showed elevated concentration indicating severe hepatic damage by CCl4. A significant decrease in serum markers was observed in rats treated with plant extract signifying the effect of the plant extract in restoring normal functional ability of the hepatocytes.

Conclusion: These results imply that the ethanolic leaf extract of Carissa edulis has a protective effect against CCl4 induced hepato-cellular injury.
}, number={2}, journal={The Nigerian Journal of Pharmacy}, author={Yohana Izam, Yocy and Chinenye Aguiyi, John}, year={2021}, month={Sep.}, pages={15–23 | https://doi.org/10.51412/psnnjp.2021.9} }
